Chichen Itza was the capital of the Mayan civilization, located in the northern area of the Yucatan Peninsula. The city was named after its inhabitants, the Itza tribe, a branch of Mayans. The city was founded around A.D. 500. Several structures have been uncovered, including platform pyramids decorated with artwork resembling that of the Aztecs. A court for playing a ritual game also stands. In this court, two walls with stone circles projecting from them face opposite each other. Players attempted to send a ball through the stone ring (much like modern basketball). Several temples and what appears to be an observatory have also been found.
