The Hagia Sophia was a cathedral begun in the reign of Justinian (532–537), built in Constantinople (now Istanbul). Known as the Church of the Holy Wisdom, it was one of the most spectacular religious buildings ever built and is the most famous Byzantine building. Although defaced by iconoclasts and then turned into a mosque, it was a model for Muslim architects as well as Christian ones. It is now a museum.
