Three days after the English repulsed invaders at the Battle of Stamford Bridge in the north of England, William of Normandy invaded the south of England. The English king was forced to assemble another army. The Battle of Hastings took place on October 14, 1066. It is unclear how the battle unfolded but it seems to have consisted of a series of attacks by the Normans against the English line. Toward evening, the Normans sent a cavalry charge that was stopped by the English, who broke ranks to plunder the dead soldiers. Seizing the opportunity, William sent his cavalry again and broke through the English line. The king was killed and with his death the battle was lost. William appeared and he was crowned king of England on Christmas Day, 1066.
